Course Aims and Objectives: Before you apply for this course, you may wish to have a look at the CAMHS Training Framework link at the bottom of this page.

This one day course aims to provide participants with an introduction to the knowledge, skills and approaches (competencies) that will help them to identify and explore the mental health issues faced by children, young people and families. The course covers key factors that undermine and promote mental health resilience (such as abuse and neglect) and explores a range of evidence based early intervention strategies.

Learning objectives are that by the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Consider definitions of child and adolescent mental health and understand factors which pose a risk including stigma and discrimination

Understand categories of mental health problems and mental health disorders

Appreciate the importance of early attachment/patterns including the impact on teenagers

Explain evidence based resilience building intervention strategies available within their own practice and other multi-agency resources including CAMHS referral

Identify how they can apply the learning to their own areas of practice

Please note: This course is a pre-requisite gateway course to the specialist courses that comprise the practitioner-led Tier 1 CAMHS Training Programme. Key themes from this course run through all the specialist courses. Potential participants who have received mental health training, which features the areas described above, within the last three years or who are working within specialist CAMHS can contact workforce development to discuss direct access the specialist courses
