Becoming a Moderator

The role of moderator is key within Bradford's moderation prcess. As an authority we pride ourselves on ensuring a quality service that is both rigorous and supportive and moderators are central to this.

To take on the role staff must have significant experience teaching Y2 or Y6 either currently or previously and be endorsed by their head teacher/head of school. Training will be provided by the LA at no cost to the school. This will follow the Standards and Testing Agency requirements and use materials provided by the agency. However there will also be supplementary training covering specific elements of the process.

Appointment to the Role

Stage 1

Potential moderators will be required to attend an initial meeting during which they will be expected to bring some Y2/Y6 writing and discuss how they would moderate it as well as giving an overview of their experience. There will be an assessed activity to complete.

Following this a decision will be taken as to suitability to go through to the next stage.

Stage 2

Training for the relevant key stage.

Formal Standards and Testing Agency assessment. Moderators must pass the assessment to be able to take on the role.

Once appointed new moderators will complete an induction process:

  • shadowing an experienced moderator on their first visit.
  • shadowed by an experienced moderator on their second visit.

 

To ensure a consistent, rigorous process lead moderators will make a number of quality assurance visits during the moderation period.

 

Expectations of Moderators

  • Relevant skills and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills; spoken and written.
  • Attend workshops held in the spring term to support schools with the moderation process.
  • Be released from school to moderate a minimum of 2 schools. This will allow for the full induction process to be completed enabling moderators to continue their role in subsequent years.

 

Expectations of Head Teachers

  • Identify staff with the relevant skills and experience for the role, signing the agreement form as an endoresement.
  • Release staff to attend any training sessions as outlined above.
  • Release staff to moderate the agreed number of schools.
  • Release staff to support at at least 1 workshop in the Spring/Summer terms.

  • Schools will have the experience of a trained moderator to support in assessments across the school.
  • Schools will be eligible to receive a one off payment plus payments per school moderated. This will be on condition of successful completion of training and assessment and fulfilment of expectations as outlined above.

 

Recruitment takes place during the Autumn term.

We are not looking to recruit for the academic year 2023-2024 but please look out Autumn 2024.
