Energy and Climate Change

Energy and Climate Change

The Councils Energy Team is responsible for safeguarding our natural resources, finding ways of using them more efficiently and to reduce our impact on the environment and climate change, within Bradford Council and the Bradford District.

The following work streams relate to the districts schools.

  • Energy & Utilities Management including procurement, billing and building controls, energy efficiency.
  • Climate Change & Carbon Management, developing action plans to reduce the impacts and risks from Climate Change on the Councils service delivery and reducing CO2 emissions from Councils operations.
  • Environmental Management including efficient use of natural resources, water, waste and wider ecosystem services, travel planning, environmental awareness and intelligence.
  • Increasing renewable energy use within the council and community.

School Energy

Energy Tariffs

The Energy Team negotiates energy contracts to help schools get the best value energy prices, through the YPO contract. The current providers through the YPO contract are npower for electricity and Corona Energy for gas.

Billing Assistance

Dealing with energy contacts and billing can be very complex, the Energy Team can help resolve any problems or issues you maybe experiencing with your schools utilities.  For more information see the Utilities Contracts webpage on this website.

Meter Readings

It is important that schools take regular meter reading so that energy consumption can be monitored, the more often meter readings are taken the better as it will help identify where energy savings can be made and ensure the school is not being over charged on utility bills.

Renewable Energy

Many schools are turning to renewable energy to cut energy bills, by installing technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps and biomass boilers. Renewable energy will help reduce energy costs, benefit the environment by reducing carbon emissions and may even help generate an income.

Certain technologies are eligible for government incentives such as Feed in Tariffs or Renewable Heat Incentives.

All schools must inform  the Energy Team of any renewable technologies they have installed.

Always contact the Energy Team and the Council Estate Management department before considering the installation of any Renewable Technology, as permission for such installations maybe required. The Energy Team can support your school in choosing the best technology to suit your building, assist with calculating payback timescales etc. Schools can fund such projects using the School Energy Efficiency Loan Fund.

Free Energy Audits & Advice

The Energy Team are able to offer your school free energy audits and advice on energy efficiency helping to reducing your schools energy costs further if you are part of the councils Built Environments SLA contract.

To request an energy audit email BEenergy@bradford.gov.uk

Display Energy Certificates (DECs)

Public buildings including schools over 250m2 must display a Display Energy Certificate prominently at all times.

DECs are designed to promote the improvement of the energy performance of buildings. They are based upon actual energy usage of a building and increase transparency about the energy efficiency of public buildings. The certificate looks similar to the energy labels provided on electrical appliances such as fridges and freezers – it uses a similar scale for energy efficiency, ie from A to G with A being the most efficient and G the least.

If you need advice regards obtaining a DEC please contact Energy Team
