Day 1: Wednesday 18th October, 9.30am-4.00pm
Excellence in Early Years Leeds Conference
The Studio, Riverside West, LS1 4AW
Our Early Years settings should be the best place to learn and achieve. There is huge potential to really engage children in their learning through quality play experiences in a stimulating environment.
All too often this potential is squeezed out of Early Years by a misguided belief that a ‘formal’ approach to teaching and learning is the only way to get results.
A wealth of experience and a passion for quality child led learning tells me that this isn’t the case. A well planned environment that underpins quality play experiences, delivered by skillful
practitioners is a guaranteed recipe for success. Through ‘Excellence in Early Years’ I will introduce you to a range of tried and tested strategies that will help you to achieve this goal.
Day 2: Tuesday 7th November, 9.30am-4.00pm @ St Francis Catholic Primary School
Day 3: Tuesday 6th February, 9.30am-4.00pm @ St Francis Catholic Primary School
Day 4: Tuesday 13th March, 9.30am-4.00pm @ St Francis Catholic Primary School
Day 5: Tuesday 26th June, 9.30am-4.00pm @ St Francis Catholic Primary School
I know a 'four letter word’ that lots of people find really shocking…it’s PLAY! As early years practitioners we should be all about the ‘P’ word. That is what we are building our children’s learning
foundations on. But in truth, quality, impactive, child initiated play is disappearing from lots of school based settings. Sometimes this is due to practitioner understanding, but largely it is due to pressure on EYFS staff to guarantee attainment. In reality,
when you teach what children need to learn in the way that they learn it best (play) you will get that attainment and more.
During this year long project in Bradford I will be working with you on establishing how you can achieve an effective play space (indoors and out) that is linked to the needs of your children,
but also attainment. We will look at the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how to achieve those in the most effective way. Of course it is not just about the space, the role of the adult is crucial for success. We will spend time unpicking
this complex and demanding job looking at planning, assessing, observing, teaching and following the children’s path. Our ultimate aim being that we can show children where to look, but not tell them what to see.
Oh, and we should have some fun while we are doing it!
