We work with schools to increase understanding of why people become refugees, the realities of life as an asylum seeker or refugee and the contributions which new migrants make to the local community. All Bradford schools – with or without students from
asylum seeker / refugee backgrounds – are welcome to join the project.
Schools can be part of the of the project in different ways:
Crisis Fund: donations
Bradford has a new Crisis Fund to help asylum seekers and refugees who are in financial crisis. It is run by Bevan House Wellbeing Centre and gives small grants to individuals, eg when there is a delay in the payment of benefits, unexpected medical or legal
costs. Schools can raise money for the fund: both one-off donations and regular giving will be warmly received.
Refugees and asylum seekers are often in need of small household items, eg electric kettles, pots and pans, or good clothing. Schools can help by making regular collections. We can arrange collection from schools. This service is run by BIASAN.
Refugee Week Art Exhibition
Every year, in June, Bradford City of Sanctuary organises an art exhibition, as part of national Refugee Week. Schools have been well represented in past years. Refugee Week always has a theme – in 2017 it was or shared future. Work from all school years,
from Reception upwards is always very welcome.
School of Sanctuary award
Some schools may be interested in working towards the Schools of Sanctuary award.
Schools of Sanctuary agree:
To learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary and about the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK.
To embed this knowledge and understanding in the curriculum and the daily life of the school.
To share this new knowledge with the school’s wider community.
The award is very flexible: we recognise that each school will approach SoS in its own way. We know that Bradford schools aim to be welcoming and safe places. The award of School of Sanctuary will recognise and reward this good practice.
