An Overview of The Multi-Tiered Approach to Behaviour Management

In this introductory session we’ll look at why the tiered approach to behaviour management is so effective. We’ll examine what’s involved at all three tiers:

  • Tier 1 (Universal) approaches look at teaching consistent whole school behavioural expectations and the use of appropriate consequences.

            Aim: To reduce new cases of problem behaviour.

  • Tier 2 (Targeted) approaches focus on supporting students at risk at presenting more serious problem behaviour.

            Aim: To reduce current cases of problem behaviour.

  • Tier 3 (Intensive) approaches involve intensive, individualised support for students, providing increased instruction and supervision, and practice with self-regulation and social skills. Outside agencies are often used to supplement behaviour action plans.

            Aim: To reduce complications, intensity and severity of current cases.

Tier 1- Universal Support (Part 1): Consistent expectations

In this session, we will look at the key elements of implementing a whole-school policy that is robust and consistent. We need teachers, support staff, lunchtime staff and SLT to all know the script for their school’s behaviour expectations. This session tells you how.

Tier 1- Universal Support (Part 2): Consistent consequences

With consistent, taught and reinforced routines embedded across your school, there will be some pupils that still do not follow our reasonable instructions. We will now need some simple consequences to communicate limit-setting. This session looks at what these consequences should be, how and when to give them, and how to avoid escalation.

Functional Behavioural Assessments

When Tier 1 strategies are ineffective, we need to identify the root causes, functions, and reinforcers of behaviour for individuals. We do this using a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA). In this session, you will learn how to carry out a simple FBA and why class teachers play the most important role in identifying barriers to learning.

Tier 2: Targeted Interventions

Once we have completed an FBA, we will know which interventions are most likely to work. This session covers how to choose interventions and how to test their effectiveness. We will also look at the vast range of resources for choosing and implementing interventions.

Tier 3: Intensive Interventions

For some highly challenging students, it is easy to think that nothing will work. If interventions at Tier 2 have failed to reduce problem behaviour, we need to look at specific individualised and intensive interventions. In the first instance, we are planning for sanity, not success. This session also gives guidance on how best to utilise schools’ limited financial and staffing resources, as well as options for school leaders when it seems like there are no options left.

Data collection, monitoring, action planning and behaviour flowchart design

Imagine schools were half as good at collecting, analysing and acting upon behaviour data as they are for academic progress data. We will look at optimised methods for collecting and analysing behaviour data, and go on to explore ways to use this data to design interventions and monitor progress. Equally important is looking at how and when different school staff (teachers, learning mentors, SLT) and outside agencies and support services (e.g. educational psychologists, CAHMS, Team Teach, Thrive etc) become involved in behaviour interventions – this is done through an introduction to behaviour flowchart design, helping schools to plan their approach through Tiers 1, 2 and 3.
