Holy Family School commissions new icon to mark its Golden Jubilee

The Holy Family School is keeping this academic year of 2014-15 as a year of celebration to mark its golden jubilee.

The school took the first students in September 1964 and the official opening was in May 1965 by the then Bishop of Leeds Bishop Dwyer.

The official celebration to mark the jubilee will be held on May 16th with Bishop Marcus Stock, the current (and relatively new) Bishop of Leeds.  It will be Bishop Stock’s first visit to Keighley.

As the result of a generous donation, the school has commissioned a new icon of The Holy Family in order to mark the jubilee and offer something back to the worshipping community at large.  Tim Garthwaite, Development Manager at the school explained, “Unless we are prepared to commission new works of art we are permanently tied to what previous generations have left behind.  We wanted to create something arising out of the tradition of religious iconography with a twenty-first century feel to it.”  The icon, painted in traditional manner on a lime-wood panel has been completed by Sara Prosser, an artist based in Kent.  It shows Jesus, Mary and Joseph “en famille” with Joseph and Jesus playing a game – perhaps marbles or dreidel with Mary to one side watching “her boys” at play.

The icon will be blessed and formally installed on May 16th.
