Are you taking part in the Big Pedal?

Children across the Bradford are being encouraged to saddle up and start pedalling to school as part of an upcoming contest that has already boosted the number of young cyclists.

The Big Pedal is run by green transport group Sustrans, and invites children to either cycle or ride their scooters to school over a 10 day period in March.

Last year seven schools in Bradford the surrounding area took part in the event, and the charity now wants other schools to sign up.

The event encourages pupils to lead healthier lives and reduce traffic around the school gates, and results from previous years have hown that the majority of children who take up cycling for the 10 day period stick with it afterwards.

Organiser of the event, Sustrans, is a leading UK charity working with communities, policy-makers and partner organisations to enable more people to travel by foot, bike or public transport.

The charity is committed to its vision of doubling the number of local journeys made on foot or by bikes or public transport by 2020. Malcolm Shepherd, Sustrans’ chief executive, said: “We hope The Big Pedal will help thousands of families rediscover the fun and freedom of cycling.

“I wish the staff, parents and pupils in all the schools good luck and look forward to finding out the results!”

It runs from March 2 to 20 and for more information please visit www.bigpedal.org.uk
