Four primary schools in Bradford have been awarded £2500 in funding and given the opportunity to work with Grow to School CIC to develop food growing and outdoor learning, funded by the Manjit Wolstenholme Fund via Give Bradford.

The successful schools are Westminster Church of England Primary Academy, Heaton St Barnabas C of E Primary School, Carrwood Primary School and Girlington Primary School.

Grow To School will work with pupils and staff from one year group at each school and help them set up a thriving, nature rich food growing outdoor learning environment. The schools will use the Growbag Primary Toolkit with expert in-school support from the Grow to School team.

The Growbag Toolkit is a year-long programme, linked to the primary Science curriculum, which includes everything needed to develop practical gardening skills, support and develop an outdoor learning curriculum and give children the opportunity to connect with nature.

The purpose of the Manjit Wolstenholme Fund is to help children regardless of gender or ethnicity; children from poor backgrounds who have the genuine potential to be leaders of the future. It is about supporting social mobility, about helping gifted young people from less privileged backgrounds to reach for the stars and follow their dreams.

Manjit Wolstenholme was the youngest woman to head an investment bank and the first woman of ethnic origin to chair a FTSE 100 company, a perfect role model and an inspirational figure for women and people from ethnic backgrounds.

Melissa Myers, Lead Teacher at Carrwood Primary School, says “Many of our pupils come from households where food growing is not a common practice. Introducing them to this experience will not only broaden their understanding of food production but also promote healthy lifestyles, environmental awareness and practical life skills.”

Ama Chaney, a Director of Grow to School, says “We are excited to be working with the four schools in Bradford. We have been impressed by the schools’ commitment and enthusiasm for giving the children opportunities that have a positive impact on them, their families, and the community.”
