On the 30th anniversary of Srebrenica Genocide, New Vic Borderlines and Remembering Srebrenica presents a special version of My Thousand Year Old Land, a documentary piece of theatre, written by a Bosnian war survivor Aida Haughton MBE and Susan Moffat, Director of New Vic Borderlines. The play brings the beauty, music and culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina to audiences, telling a story of the search for truth, justice and hope through women whose lives are changed by the deaths of their communities’ men in war.

"Having worked for the ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia) in Bosnia from 1996 - 2001, I can say that the cast portrayed the genocide in Srebrenica both sensitively and forensically. At first, I tried to stop my tears but unashamedly let them fall. I found it interesting when the cast sometimes spoke in Bosnian.... This play has international significance and should be seen worldwide. Robert McNeil MBE, former UN Anatomical Pathology Technologist

“It was a wonderful play, very moving and truly educational too.” Aron Mon, Remembering Srebrenica Project Manager, Birmingham

The women – Pravda (meaning “justice”), Istina (“truth”), and Nada (“hope”) – sit around a table, grinding coffee and telling stories. Around them on stage are men’s boots, belts and a hat. It’s what writer and director Susan Moffat calls “the presence of absence”. The testimonies are complemented by traditional folk songs and poetry which examine what it means to have roots, and to feel the connections between land and people.
