A FREE 'In Our Place' online course is available, for parents and carers of children in year 5 and year 6, to help their children with additional needs get ready for the transition to secondary school.

We are now in that time of year when Year 6 children are having visits to high school and getting ready to start their new school in September. This period can feel like a major change for all children and their families. And while this is a big step for all children, for young people with additional needs, the anxieties and challenges can be heightened.

To support families, a completely free, online course is available from the In Our Place course library.

‘Moving up to secondary school for children with additional needs’ is available FREE to all parents and carers in the Bradford District – just by using the code BDPARENTS.

Who is the course for?

The course is relevant for families with children with a wide range of additional needs, including dyspraxic, dyslexic, very anxious, autistic, really dislike change, have ADHD, a learning disability, a physical disability or any other additional need.

The course is aimed at parents and carers of children with additional needs in Years 5 and 6.

While in Year 6 the transition to high school feels closer, the course is also helpful during Year 5, to help parents, carers and children start getting ready for the journey towards secondary school.

What does the course include?

The course is tailored so that whatever their child’s needs and developmental age, parents and carers can use the ideas and techniques to help better understand their child, their emotions and how to help them process or manage them.

The course is also a support for the emotional wellbeing of parents and carers of children with additional needs.

This course has been developed by NHS psychology experts working with Solihull Approach. It is informed by experience and is designed to help families in practical ways.
