The Summer Reading Challenge is a free programme that takes place every summer in public libraries across the UK. It encourages children to keep reading during the school holidays — helping to prevent the "summer reading dip" and build a lifelong love of books.

Bradford Libraries Summer Reading Challenge brochure with hundreds of activities, events and workshops for your pupils to take part in.
We can let you know which children in your school complete the challenge so that you can arrange any special celebrations in the new term. Schools with the largest number of pupils taking part may be awarded a Special Achievement Award!

Story Garden live online event for schools with Dapo Adeola, 10 June, 11am, online Join award-winning illustrator Dapo Adeola for a special live online event to celebrate the launch of the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge: Story Garden – Adventures in Nature
and the Great Outdoors. Broadcast directly into classrooms and libraries, this vibrant session will take students on a visual and creative journey through the process of creating stories and characters, including a special draw along session. There will also
be a chance to ask Dapo questions through the Q&A and find out about his journey to becoming an illustrator. A recording of this session will also be made available as an online video to access and use across the summer.

Summer Reading Challenge with Trish Cook and Alex Wharton, 23 June, 10.30am, British Library Online British Library are joined by Camden Libraries to get readers revved up for this summer’s challenge. This joyous online event takes its inspiration from
Unearthed: The Power of Gardening and celebrates this year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme, the Story Garden.
