Teaching Phase One Phonics in the EYFS

To be completed by: 12:00

Time: Wed 08 Nov 2023 09:00-12:00 | Venue: Margaret McMillan Tower

Do you work with Nursery or Reception aged children and looking for training or a refresher on Phase 1 phonics? Then here is everything you need to learn for teaching successful phase 1 phonics.

Phase 1 Phonics concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.

In this a half day face to face training, practitioners will explore Phase 1 Phonics and develop understanding around some of the skills children need to acquire in order to become successful and confident readers. The aim is to embed the Phase 1 adult-led activities in a language-rich provision that serves the best interests of the children by fully recognising their propensity for play and its importance in their development. We will also look at how Launchpad for Literacy toolkit compliments the phase 1 aspects.

By the end of the session participants will have the knowledge and confidence to deliver Phase 1 phonics activities within the Foundation Stage, as well as drawing on and promoting learning in the others areas learning, particularly Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Expressive Arts & Design, where, for example, music plays a key part in developing children’s language.
