We are working in collaboration with Nabeela Ahmed, local writer, multilingual poet, spoken word artist and photographer. Nabeela writes and shares her work in English, Urdu and Pahari. Her poetry manuscript was shortlisted by Verve
Poetry Press in 2022. She teaches creative writing and multilingual poetry workshops in schools, libraries and online.
For National Poetry Day, Nabeela is running 1.5 hour poetry workshops where children will create their own poetry based around the theme of
‘Refuge’. During the workshop, they will have the chance to explore and draw inspiration from the exhibitions inside Cliffe Castle Museum. They will discuss the definition of refuge, what it means to different communities, each of us and how
objects can help to tell a story of refuge. They will also hear poetry on themes linked to the Museum and Galleries. After this, they will learn about a range of poetry techniques and be given the opportunity to create their own poetry. To finish, there will
be an opportunity for those who want to share their poems to do so with the rest of the group.
This workshop would be suitable for Years 5, 6, 7 or 8. There is space for 2 classes as we have one session running in the morning and one session running in the afternoon, with an option to access self-led resources for a full day of
learning if you would like to broaden the pupils experience of the day.
