The Physical and Medical Team, a team of specialist teachers within STaSS, are very proud to announce that three schools have become the first settings in Bradford to be awarded the title of ‘Physical Friendly Setting’!

St Edmund’s Nursery School and Children’s Centre

Keighley and St Andrew’s Primary School

Bradford Academy

These settings have all demonstrated that they meet the necessary standards in supporting children and young people (CYP) with additional physical needs.

The Physical and Medical team in Bradford have used the pdnet Standards to devise a process by which settings can be awarded the status of being ‘Physically Friendly’. Pdnet is a national organisation established to support professionals who work with CYP with additional physical needs.

The settings worked over the course of 10 months, with support from the Physical and Medical team and pdnet’s online resources, to audit their current provision, devise action plans to target areas for development and finally, ensure that they could demonstrate meeting the pdnet Standards sufficiently for the award to be given.

Comments from the settings on having undergone the process:

The process of completing the Matrix and creating an action plan helped us to reflect on our practice and think more about how we can build on it”.

‘It highlighted the need to have a staff member trained as a Manual Handling Trainer’”.

“Staff feedback forms enabled us to develop our message to staff around pd, focusing on finding solutions to any barriers to learning”.

The Physical and Medical team are disappointed that they cannot hold an event to celebrate the success of the settings at this time but would like to express how pleased they are in the way that staff embraced the process with enthusiasm and diligence, developing existing processes and resources and initiating new ones.

Are you interested in becoming the next Physical Friendly Setting?

The award lasts for two years after which time a setting is re-assessed in order to continue to carry the title. The Physical and Medical team are looking forward to working with more settings in order that CYP with physical needs are supported fully and confidently across Bradford settings.
