Emotional Difficulties 

Human emotions are strongly linked to the way an individual presents, and managing these is closely linked to their capacity to self-regulate and suitably adapt their behaviour to their environment. Having difficulties naming, recognising, and managing emotions is a common feature for children and young people identified under SEMH which may lead to periods of dysregulation and distressed reactions. This page is dedicated to providing resources and information for schools and settings to use to support this area of need.

Resources

  • Emotional Development Assessment - This resource enables the setting to identify at which emotional developmental level the individual operates and to devise a suitable package of provision to support the individual to make progress in the five domains of emotional literacy.
  • Developmental Checklist - This tool is part of the above scheme and can be used to identify the key areas of need connected with an individual's emotional development.
  • Anxiety Curve - This is a link to the one page visual designed by Kali Dunn Buron to identify the key features of the escalation process. This can be used with the Incredible 5 point Scale designed by the same author.
  • Incredible 5 point Scale - This visual is created to support the individual understand the different levels of emotional resonse. It helps them identify and name each level, be able to articulate how it feels for them, and access specific prompts to enable them to action some strategies to supoprt self-regulation.
