Sector Programme Boards bring together schools, colleges, employers, universities and industry experts to ensure that education pathways reflect the skills, knowledge and experiences needed in today's and tomorrow's workforce.
By becoming a board member, your school can play an active role in influencing place-based approach to local skills priorities while creating valuable opportunities for students.

What's Involved?
Sector Programme Boards meet three times per year, either virtually or in person, bringing together representatives from education, employers, training providers and industry partners to collaboratively shape the future skills agenda for the district.
Board members provide strategic oversight to ensure inclusive system design and access to high-quality, employer-informed learning pathways that support informed career choices and progression into education, apprenticeships and employment.
Membership provides an opportunity to influence strategic discussions, contribute expertise, and ensure that education programmes remain relevant, inclusive and responsive to industry needs. Board members play an important advisory role, helping to bridge
the gap between education and employment while creating meaningful opportunities for learners.
Board members have the opportunity to:
- Share educational expertise and learner perspectives, ensuring that programme development remains student-focused and reflects the realities of the education environment.
- Help shape programme priorities, objectives and activities, contributing ideas and feedback that influence the development of high quality sector learning programmes.
- Support the co design of employer informed and led learning experiences, helping to ensure programme relevance, engagement and alignment to future work force need.
- Identify opportunities for curriculum integration, enrichment and employer engagement, including workplace experiences, employer-led projects, guest speakers, mentoring and industry visits.
- Support collaboration between education and industry partners, fostering stronger relationships that benefit both school programmes, employer need, learner outcomes, ultimately strengthening local talent pipelines.
- Review and advise on programme content and delivery, ensuring activities align with industry requirements, labour market intelligence, Gatsby benchmarks and emerging skill demands.
- Champion equity, diversity and inclusion, helping to ensure programmes are accessible, representative and designed to engage learners from all backgrounds.
- Advocate for the needs of young people, supporting the creation of inspiring and meaningful pathways into further education, apprenticeships and employment.
- Contribute intelligence and insights relating to local challenges, opportunities and emerging trends within education and the wider skills landscape.
- Support the development of sector talent pipelines, helping to connect education and employment pathways within key growth sectors across the district.
- Act as ambassadors for their sector and organisation, promoting opportunities, sharing best practice and encouraging wider participation across the district.
- Contribute to the quality assurance of programmes ensuring the experiences offered to learners remain impactful, scalable and relevant.
- Act as ambassadors for the sector; Champion sector pathways and skills within their organisation and wider network, helping to raise awareness of careers, progression routes and workforce opportunities available to young people.
- Raise the profile of young people and nominate young people undertaking programmes for an annual district sector award.
Time Commitment: three board meetings per year, supported by occasional consultation and feedback opportunities between meetings. This is a strategic and collaborative role designed to maximise impact while remaining manageable for busy
education professionals.
