Bradford Council is inviting primary schools and special schools to take part in
the third annual Name the Gritter competition, giving pupils the chance to leave their mark on one of the district's hardworking winter road heroes.
This year, five more gritters will receive names, and we're looking for one school from each constituency to help choose them.
A school has already been selected from Keighley and Ilkley, so we're now looking for schools from:
- Bradford East
- Bradford West
- Bradford South
- Shipley
This is a chance for children to get creative and come up with a name that could be seen travelling across the district for years to come.
Get creative!
We want pupils to think outside the box. Names can be:
- Funny or clever puns
- Inspired by Bradford district, its places, people or heritage
- Based on recent films, TV shows, music, games or other pop culture
- Completely original creations
Whether it's a witty wordplay, a local legend, or something that captures children's imaginations, we'd love to hear it.
A visit from the gritter team
The competition isn't just about naming a vehicle.
Once the winning names have been chosen, the council's highways team will visit each participating school with one of their gritter wagons. Pupils will have the chance to see the vehicle up close, learn how the highway team helps keep roads safe during winter,
and be there when the winning name from their school is officially revealed.
It's a fun way to combine creativity with learning about an important public service that helps communities across the Bradford district during the colder months.
