Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning, and levels of parental engagement are consistently associated with better academic outcomes. Evidence from the EEF’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit suggests that effective parental engagement
can lead to learning gains of +3 months over the course of a year.
Yet it can be difficult to involve all parents in ways that support children’s learning, especially if parents’ own experiences of school weren’t positive.
This is why the EEF has produced the ‘Working with parents to support children’s learning’ guidance report, designed to support primary and secondary schools to work with parents – particularly those from disadvantaged homes.
Stu Mathers, School Engagement and Dissemination Manager at the Education Endowment Foundation, and one of the writers of the guidance report, will explore the four key recommendations, and offer some practical recommendations:
- Critically review how you work with parents
- Provide practical strategies to support learning at home
- Tailor school communications to encourage positive dialogue about learning
- Offer more sustained and intensive support where needed
We will also be joined by Kathryn Loftus, Programme Director for Bradford Opportunity Area about the work they have done so far on increasing parental engagement across Bradford.
