Bradford Museums & Galleries have been working to hard to ensure our offer to schools will support you in teaching the new curriculum. We’ve been adapting old favourites and will be introducing new workshops from September.

We’ve been adapting old favourites and will introduce new workshops from September so whether its skulls or the Stone Age, Islamic civilisation or local famous artists or a local history experience, we have lots to choose from!

The Art and Science of Noticing

1.5hrs - £90

A workshop which encourages pupils to respond to the museum & gallery objects which inspire them. You can identify which areas of the museum building or collection you want to work with so it is a great creative starting point for a topic. During the workshop pupils will practice drawing skills, create a sketchbook page of details and write a poem without even realising!

Hello Hockney

An Introduction to Bradford’s most famous artist, David Hockney.  Pupils will explore his work on display and will use some of his techniques to create a large scale collaborative ‘Hockney style’ artwork to take back to school.

Using artwork and artefacts pupils will explore early Islamic trade, materials, ideas and influences in art as well as understanding the place of early Islamic culture in the context of world culture.

Lowry Landscapes

Pupils will use LS Lowry’s original painting ‘An Industrial Landscape’ from 1952 to explore how pictures can tell us about what life was like in the past.  Looking at shape and colour and then relating Lowry’s landscape to their own locality, pupils will create their own landscape piece.

Painting Investigator: Arab Weaver

Pupils will uncover the story of ‘The Arab Weaver’ painting by exploring the lives, home and work of the characters in the painting through drama, games and discussion.  Through questioning pupils will further analyse the painting to discover more about the characters, setting and Islamic culture in Algeria.

Takeover Day

Following successful Takeover Days as part of the national ‘Kids in Museums’ initiative, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery now offers a unique takeover day experience for class groups.  Pupils go behind the scenes to meet and work with a variety of staff, such as curators and collections officers and participate in monitoring pests, looking after objects, dealing with enquiries, gilding frames with real gold leaf and learning how to give guided tours for family and friends.

Through carrying out an archaeological dig and solving a murder, pupils find out about life at Bolling Hall in Tudor times. 1 hr taught workshop and 1 teacher led with instructions.

A Mystery at Bolling Hall

In midwinter 1600 a stranger arrives at Bolling Hall but who is he and where does he come from? A storytelling and discussion based workshop.

 

A Stranger’s Case

Through meeting Protestant servant Joan Beldon and Catholic travelling musician Nick Nidderdale, children will find out more about the religious tensions of the Tudor period.

Using toys from the past 100 years pupils explore the working mechanisms and everyday materials of toys. This workshop encourages pupils to use historical terms, group toys according to similarity, difference and describe toys according to characteristics.

Warp and weft: A material journey

Follow the material journey from sheep to suit! Pupils will explore the different stages of woollen fabric production using hands on activities and through viewing working mill machinery, children will be introduced to this historically significant local industry.

Explore how much washing has changed in the last 70 years. In a typical Bradford back to back house pupils will participate in a washday, using wash boards, possers, dolly blue and the mangle.

A Victorian classroom

As local mill working children, pupils will experience lessons at Moorside Board School including copywriting with dip pens, using slates and singing period songs.  Pupils will also further explore life in Victorian Bradford and the significance of the mill industry and local educational reform.
