Free School Meal Applications - help us to help you

We have received an unprecedented number of free school meal applications over the last few weeks and we are asking schools to assist us so that we are able to process eligible applications in time for the beginning of the new school term in September.

 

Last month we had over 3 times the number of applications we had in June last year.

In the first 7 days of July we have received just over 100 applications per day, in July last year we received 7 applications per day.

66% of applications made so far in July are not eligible

 

We fully appreciate that schools (especially primaries) have to ensure full take up of free school meals and security of the pupil premium, but here are some suggestions that will help make sure you are targeting the right parents to apply.

  • only ask parents to complete and return an application form where they claim qualifying benefits - they are listed on the application form and on our website
  • only ask parents who are not already registered to complete a form. We have already pre registered hundreds of children who are starting school in September through our own system of identification. Use the lists we send you to check the current position.
  • encourage parents to use our new online application form - its quicker, they get an immediate response to their application and we don't have to process the not eligible cases.
