The purpose of the survey is to determine the allocation of Specialist EMA Teachers and LA resources for the Autumn and Spring terms next year (2014-2015).
Please note: The deadline for returning the New to English audit forms is Friday 27th June 2014.
The survey asks staff at your school to identify any ethnic minority pupil not speaking English as their first language, who has been admitted to the British school system within the last twelve months. This does not include ethnic minority pupils in nurseries,
reception classes and in the sixth form in secondary schools.
The overall intention of the survey is to obtain an overview of the level of need in schools and to enable us to prioritise support. For this reason we have asked staff to indicate QCA Step levels for all pupils listed on the enclosed form.
We use the following criteria to fully inform the deployment of our Specialist EMA Teachers:
- The numbers of New Arrivals to the school in the last 12 months
- The School prioritisation
- Specific school data and information provided to the EMA Service through the Support for New Arrivals Audit
- Key information and requests made at Specific School Monitoring group meetings (SSMG’s SSRG’S)
- Feedback from school Senior Leaders
Our priority at all times is to work with schools to support and raise the achievement, attainment and progress of all learners who are New to English. In order to do this we have developed a
‘residency’ approach to delivering support which is focused on developing and building capacity within a school to ensure that strategies, systems and processes to support New to English students become sustainable. A residency placement can
either be a Specialist EMA Teacher working in one school for the duration of one or two terms or in several schools.
Please can completed forms be emailed to us by Friday 27th June 2014.
Placements will be confirmed with schools and Specialist EMA Teachers in the week ending
Friday 11th July 2014.
