The Q-BEx questionnaire gathers information about an EAL pupil’s language background and experience, in English and in their home language(s). This information can help schools estimate where individual pupils are on the EAL continuum. The questionnaire
is designed to be completed by caregivers or by the children themselves if they are old enough. It is not designed to be filled in by teachers or other staff who work with EAL pupils, but we envisage that these staff may support caregivers or children completing
the questionnaire. More information about the project can be found on our website at www.q-bex.org.
As part of the pilot phase, and with the aim of creating a school-optimised version, we are inviting colleagues to use the questionnaire in their settings, with a caregiver or older child, and then provide us with feedback. We would particularly like to
gather views on the questionnaire’s accessibility and ease-of-use for caregivers and children. The feedback will be in the form of online focus groups.
We are now inviting expressions of interest, with a view to trialling out the questionnaire later in January and in February, and to organise feedback sessions with teachers some time in February- March. This tentative timeline is of course dependent on
the ongoing development of the pandemic and on schools’ many other commitments.
If you are interested or if you have any further questions, please email us at qbex@leeds.ac.uk.
We look forward to hearing from you!
