Schools’ Smile Day - get involved in an art project to make you smile

To be completed by: Fri 09 Jul 2021

Time: -Fri 09 Jul 2021 | Venue:

Our Street Gallery (OSG) is a 12-month, district-wide project funded by Bradford Council - you may have already seen our work on billboards and hoardings with our distinct yellow crosses dotted around the Bradford District.

Episode 1 saw a collaboration between OSG, photographer Carolyn Mendelson, and over 40 young people from across Bradford.

In Episode 2, we have been collecting photos of smiling Bradfordians to spread little joy in these tough times. We will be sharing this love across the district by displaying the images as guerrilla galleries in the back-to-back streets and ginnels of Bradford to engage with as many people as possible.

We propose a ‘Schools’ Smiles Day’ on Friday 9th July where each school in Bradford encourages their students to share their smile with the project. We realise that not all students are able to show their face, so we would encourage them to get creative with it!

Perhaps a series of art lessons dedicated towards making the best masks/hats to spruce up their smiles!

We hope that ‘School’s Smiles Day’ can be part of a light-hearted return to the classroom encourage the children to engage with wider Bradford community. We only ask that schools ensure those partaking under 13yrs have parental consent to do. We would love to host an OSG install on the site of the school with the most engagement for Schools’ Smile Day. The install will be free of charge, with all materials covered by the OSG team. For those interested in taking part on a smaller scale can do so with our printable posters for display around the schools.

Schools’ Smile Day FAQ

Will there be a charge?

OSG is funded by Bradford Council so no charges will be incurred throughout the project, apart from printable posters for the smaller scale participation.

Where will the galleries be?

The gallery will be on the school premises, either indoors or outdoors. We want the winning school to be creatively involved as much as possible, but OSG will be there every step of the way to get the install up.

We do not want to host a gallery but would still like to get involved?

You can still get involved by uploading student/staff smiles onto oursreetgallery.org/photobooth

What about parental consent?

For any student to participate any students who are under 13 will need parental consent to upload their smile - due to safeguarding.

What is the deadline to upload a smile?

The deadline/official date for ‘school smiles day’ will be on the 9th of July. We recommend holding 2 sessions before the deadline date to allow students ‘to get creative’ and to make sure they are all involved!

How will the selection process work?

The school with the highest amount of engagement (i.e., number of smiles per school population size) will win the ‘Schools’ Smiles Day’ gallery install. Once the school has been selected, OSG will artwork all smiles submitted into the template, ensuring all smiles submitted are included!

What happens to the poster after Episode 2 is over?

The school will be able to keep the posters from the gallery hosted.

How do we upload a smile?

Once the school has confirmed they would like to be involved in Schools’ Smiles Day, OSG will send a ‘how to’ step-by-step document.
