Aspiring Professionals Programme (APP)
The APP supports high achieving Year 12 students from
low income backgrounds across the UK to access top universities and careers. We offer support through our four pillars:
- Mentoring by a professional
- Tailored skills sessions and career workshops
- University application support and guidance
- Internships with top employers
Students must apply by completing our application form
here.
APP City
Students who live within an hour of an APP City (Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London Manchester and Newcastle) are offered skill sessions, internships and university application support in their APP city. They will also
receive a mentor from their chosen profession.
We offer support to young people interested in:
Accountancy | Architecture | Banking & Finance | Biology & Chemistry| Business | Digital | Engineering & Physics | Law | Media & Communications | Medicine| Politics | No Preference
APP Residential
APP Residential offers the opportunity to undertake a one or two week internship with a top employer in London with all expenses paid. In addition to the internship, students receive skill sessions and university application support whilst
on the residential. Their mentor will be from the employer that they undertake their placement with.
APP Residential is available to students interested in:
Accountancy | Banking & Finance| Digital | Engineering & Physics | Law | Medicine
APP Reach
We are very keen to work with schools, colleges and parts of the country that do not usually have young people on our programmes. Therefore, if this applies to you and your top achievers don’t quite meet our criteria, you should encourage them to apply as
they may still be eligible to receive support from us.
APP Reach is designed to offer as many aspects of our programme as we can to people who could benefit from our activities and resources, subject to our capacity and their location. All students will receive a mentor and access to online
resources. To find out more about APP Reach, please contact us.

“The summer residential internship at Jacobs was everything that I was hoping it would be and more! It provided me with countless opportunities that I never would have had otherwise. I’ve networked with and met professionals and it’s built up so many
of my skills, as well as building my confidence. I have made friends for life on this programme and it’s all thanks to the SMF” – Amy, 2018 Cohort, County Londonderry
- Each year, at least 60% of SMF students go onto Russell Group universities
- 86% of students in 2016 said they wouldn’t have got their internship without the help of the SMF
- IFS Studies show that the scale of our impact on elite university entry is akin to a candidate having 3 A*s at A-Level rather than 3 As.
