Understanding metacognition
Participants will develop their own understanding of metacognition and self-regulation, and will begin to investigate how they can develop these skills with their pupils, as well as fully exploring the EEF report to provide a considered response to ‘why?’
building metacognition and self-regulation into a school’s culture is so important. Day one will look at planning for the start of your school’s journey into metacognition and self-regulation, including the initial audit process of your own understanding and
the understanding of your staff team. A deeper understanding of planning, monitoring, and evaluation will provide the systems by which self-regulation and metacognition become a shared language and a shared goal.

Developing metacognition and self -regulation in the classroom
Day two will take a more in-depth look at the skills and practices that can enable a school to fully realize the impact of metacognitive awareness and competency. With a focus on classroom practice and the practical implications of self-regulation for your
pupils and staff, there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the challenges and rewards of building metacognition into your school’s culture. Participants will investigate a variety of tasks to support learners develop their metacognitive skills in the
classrooms, while an introduction to basic theory on memory will provide food for thought, and reflection on your school’s current strengths and development needs. Practical examples will be used to illustrate classroom practice.

A whole school approach to metacognition and self -regulation
Further discussion and theory with practical resources and tools will facilitate a considered and precisely targeted plan to develop a whole school approach. This final half-day will involve evaluating and monitoring the implementation of metacognitive skills
that gap tasks set on day one and two will have helped to scaffold. Through discussion with peers and the course facilitators, you will be provided with knowledge and systems to take your own school through to the conclusion of its metacognitive path.
