USING YOUR CONTINUOUS PROVISION TO PROMOTE MATHEMATICAL THINKING

Producing and delivering carefully crafted mathematics sessions is only one part of developing children as mathematicians. There are many techniques and behaviours that adult practitioners can put into place that promote learning outside of the mathematics lesson.

This course will look at how to:

  • Create areas of continuous provision in your classroom that develop mathematical thinking
  • Promote quality mathematical dialogue between adult practitioners and  the children whilst at play in the different areas of continuous provision
  • Use daily routines to develop mathematical understanding

There will be opportunities for professional dialogue with colleagues from a variety of settings and the course leader, Sharon Day, will be modelling mathematical dialogue with children for the delegates to observe. This will allow them to consider how to develop learning through taking ‘unplanned’ opportunities whilst interacting with children at play.

The intended audience for this course who will find it useful are: teachers of the EYFS; teachers of KS1 where continuous provision is being used; mathematics subject leaders who wish to develop their own understanding of the use and potential power of continuous provision. In response to the training, teachers will be expected to make improvements in their schools and to bring photographic evidence to share with colleagues to show the ‘before and after’ stages of improvements they have implemented (along with some dialogue on any impact on children’s learning).

The dates are as follows. Delegates will need to attend all three sessions:
