The project is a partnership initiative between West Yorkshire Trading Standards and Bradford Council which aims to help tackle obesity in Bradford. One of the commissioned milestones is to raise awareness of the negative impact fast food can have if consumed
Working together with local schools the project aims to inform children about the negative impact excess sugar, salt and fat can have on individual’s health. The national child measurement programme highlighted that over a fifth of school children leaving
primary school are overweight or obese. The Good Food Bradford project believes that when a child enters into secondary school they have more control over the foods they consume, whether this is just wiser decisions on what to spend the money they get given
for food, or whether it is informing parents of healthier options when shopping as a family.
The session is flexible and dependent on the audience’s needs. They can look at things like the levels of sugar in popular food and drink, salt consumption, the Eatwell guide, portion sizes and healthier takeaway consumption. Some schools want a quick assembly
covering the basics of healthier eating; others ask for a more intense session focusing on one specific issue they find a problem for example sugar consumption through excessive fizzy drink consumption. Other schools have requested a short parents' courses covering
a range of topics surrounding healthy eating.
I am a registered Public Health Nutritionist so am able to cover topics like current government healthy eating guidelines, nutritional profiles of nutrients, and how to apply key healthy eating messages to food consumed outside the home. The sessions offered
will be interactive and informative based around the specific needs of the school and year group.
Working with school children and takeaway owners the project aims to bridge the gap between members of the public not asking for a particular item due to a fear of being embarrassed when it’s not available and the takeaway owners not offering healthier options
because they feel customers don’t want it as they are not asking for it.
