A cohort of twenty seven supplementary schools completed their Level 3 in Safeguarding and Designated Safeguarding Officer training run by the Supplementary Schools Support Service within the Diversity and Cohesion Service.

The course was delivered by Gem Compliance and accredited by the CPD Certification Service as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Development Professional Development guidelines

Designated Safeguarding Leads are the first point of contact for all safeguarding questions and concerns therefore it was important that the person holding that role within suppementary school is familiar with their responsibilities and has up-to-date child protection knowledge.

The course was designed to help supplementary schools with a designated child protection role to understand about their job particularly looking at the safeguarding structure with specific designated lead responsibilities and how to recognise and respond to abuse and the importance of working together and sharing information.

The course used a variety of delivery methods including case studies and scenario-based exercises to help participants to feel confident in fulfilling their role as Designated Safeguarding Officers.

Some of the supplementary schools which took part in this pilot scheme were Noor-ul-Islam, Al-Qalam Academy, Tabligh ul Islam, Nusrat Ul Islam, ITC, Anjuman-E-Haideria, Madni Masjid West Bowling , Misbah ul Uloom, Hindu Cultural Society and Young Masters.

The Diversity and Cohesion Service supports over one hundred supplementary schools across the Bradford district, provides free compliance training (First Aid, Fire Marshall, Health and Safety, Behaviour Management) as well as help with improving teaching and learning within supplementary schools, help with DBS checks and supporting teaching of mother-tongue languages.
