Consultation on improving information in identifying children missing from education

Further to the news item published on Bradford Schools Online on 23 June 2016, the Government has today published the response to the consultation 'Improving Information in Identifying Children Missing from Education'. The response can be read here

The Government will lay the Education (Pupil Regsitration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2016 before Parliament in July 2016. The regulations will come into force on 1 September 2016 and the duties will apply to all schools and LAs in England

All schools including Independent and Private schools will be required to inform the LA of any pupil they admit or remove from the school roll.

The proposals affect all non-standard transitions; this is whenever a child of compulsory school age leaves a school before completeing the schools final year or joins the school after the start of the first year.

The proposals also place a greater responsiblity on schools to carry out reasonable enquiries to establish the whereabouts of a child prior to removal from roll.  This is already established 'good practice' across Bradford schools.

Next Steps

We have designed and created a secure web based portal on Bradford Schools Online for schools to input details of any child they admit or remove from roll.  We will publish details of how to access and use this over the summer in order that schools can begin to use this from the start of term in September.
