Changes to the National Curriculum, assessment and testing, and Ofsted inspection have necessitated a review of the teaching of both reading and writing in schools.
At the meeting, delegates will explore how quality texts can be used to teach, develop and embed key skills for both reading and writing.
Gill will demonstrate, with practical examples, how a book-based unit of work can be structured to include:
- Meaningful reading tasks that teach Higher Order Reading Skills
- Speaking and listening activities to develop understanding of structure, characterisation and setting
- Writing activities for a clear audience and purpose, using a quality text as both a model and a stimulus for writing
Delegates will also consider the adoption of a ‘Literature Spine’ within their school – making informed choices to identify specific books for each year group that can be integrated into book-based units of work.
