The use of emery cloth on metalworking lathes

The Occupational Safety Team would like to remind all schools that the use of emery cloth to polish, deburr or size components whilst they are held in the rotating chuck jaws of a lathe is a highly dangerous operation and must not occur in schools.

The HSE have issued further advice on this issue (see link below). They describe acceptable methods of carrying out this process. However, our advice would be to avoid this type of operation altogether in the school environment.
