Clarification of Occupational Safety Services for LA Schools

It has recently come to our attention that some companies are selling, or attempting to sell, health and safety services to local authority schools. We therefore felt it important to clarify the arrangements already in place.

If you are a local authority maintained school please be aware that you already have access to the Council's occupational safety advice and guidance service free of charge at the point of access.
As an employer, there is a statutory duty on the Council to make arrangements for access to competent health and safety advice for all schools where staff are employees of the Council (community and voluntary controlled schools).  However further to this, Bradford Council currently provides an occupational safety service to all Bradford local authority maintained schools (including voluntary aided, foundation and trust status).
We offer a traded service to academies, free schools and the private sector which sit outside of the local authority arrangements.
If you are a local authority maintained school please think twice before using your limited resources to purchase a service to which you already have access.
We undertake proactive visits to all LA schools as part of our rolling programme.  If you have not received a visit for some time and would like one sooner rather than later please contact us to make arrangements.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact either Anne Marie Ullyott or Adam Varley, or call 01274 431007.
You can also access the occupational safety website.
