Curriculum Innovation’s new Technology in EYFS curriculum

The Curriculum Innovation team have been working in consultation with Tony Woods (independent EYFS consultant) and some fantastic EYFS practitioners from schools across Bradford to develop an effective IT curriculum for the Early Years.

Supporting development towards the Early Learning Goals and potential for children to excel with technology, the scheme considers the ELG and beyond statements. ELG ‘children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes. Beyond the ELG ‘children find out about and use a range of everyday technology. They select appropriate applications that support an identified need – for example in deciding how best to make a record of a special event in their lives, such as a journey on a steam train.’

Early Years settings requested that the Curriculum Innovation team write some guidance as to how the use of ICT can impact on development in the Early Years. The document will be a work in progress as technology continues to develop and subscribers can download it by logging in and clicking on curriculum and then Technology in EYFS.

The areas we have outlined are:-

  • Digital Cameras in the Early Years
  • Sound in the Early Years
  • Mobile Devices in the Early Years
  • Remote and Programmable Toys in the Early Years
  • Computer/Laptops/IWBs/Plasmas in the Early Years

The Curriculum Innovation team have already run 2 half day EYFS conferences to introduce the scheme and they proved to be extremely popular. We are running 2 more half day conferences in the New Year.
