The education of our young people is a top priority for all in City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

We welcome you to your teaching career here and encourage you to read the Bradford Covenant which sets out that commitment in some detail.

As the Appropriate Body for your school we are responsible for making sure that your induction is in line with Statutory Guidance and as successful as possible.

Your registration and assessments are all undertaken on NQT manager. You should automatically receive and email with your log-in details once you are registered on the system. Check with your mentor if this doesn't happen - they can resend the information themselves.

These documents and pieces of information help you to know what is expected of you and what you can expect from your school in terms of your induction programmes. Each school and institution is different, so you will need to check with your mentor about the specifics for your own context and setting.

The Statutory Guidance document

This is the document which is used by all Appropriate Bodies, Schools and Insitutions which are involved with induction, to ensure that they are all undertaking the programme of support in accordance with the regulations. The rest of the information below is based on this document. Your mentor school be aware of the contents of this, or know who to talk to if they have any questions. (Return to top of page)

What is statutory in induction?

  • Access to a designated induction tutor within school.
  • A teaching timetable equivalent to 90% of that normally allocated to teachers in the school.
  • Observation of the NQT’s work and follow up discussions.
  • Opportunities for an NQT to observe good practice from experienced teachers in their own school and in other schools.
  • Half termly professional reviews of progress, which are informed by evidence of the NQT’s work. 
  • An individualised professional development programme based on the NQT’s strengths and areas for development. 
  • Rigorous and fair assessment of the NQT’s professional practice including formal assessment meetings at the end of every term.

What to expect from the year ahead - document

This chart has on it the key moments for an induction year, but there will be specific events and activities which will be unique to each setting, so again, check with your mentor what will need adding to this calendar. The more you know about, the more you'll be prepared for things.

You will have at least six formal observations of your teaching; three half termly formal meetings to review your progress; three formal termly meetings at points of assessment; weekly or fortnightly mentor meetings to discuss your targets and look at how well you are doing.

There will also be other occasions when your teaching will be assessed to fit in with whole school monitoring of teaching and learning or other processes and systems which are in place. Talk to your mentor about what you can expect. (Return to top of page)

Action plan - diagram

Every NQT should have an individual programme of support based on the Teachers' Standards and the identified areas for development. All teachers in Bradford schools in 2020-2021 have access to the Early Career Framework ahead of the national role out in 2021. This framework should supoprt you in identifying the areas of development which you have in your practice and should be documented in such a way as to make it really clear to you at all times how well you are doing. How to effectively use your NQT time

You are given an additional 10% non-contact time whilst you undertake induction (or the equivalent if you are part-time). It is the only time you are given CPD time as a teacher and you should use this opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding. You should keep a record of how you have spent the time each week and discuss this with your mentor to show how you are furthering your progress towards the targets you have been set.

The use of this time should be guided by your mentor and linked to the Early Career Framework and they should help you to access the development activities where necessary.

Examples of good use of NQT time include - observing other teachers in your own school and where appropriate in others too; working with colleagues who lead on specific areas which could have an impact on your teaching - Data experts, SENCOs; working with parallel class teachers on planning or assessment issues; research into new pedagogic developments which are relevant to the targets you have been set; appropriate courses or external events linked to your targets.

Attendance at generic NQT training events is not always productive if the topic being covered is one not on your action plan. Discuss with your mentor if you feel that your time would be better spent in some other form of CPD. The Teachers' Standards - document

As with your initial teacher training you are required to show that you have met the requirements for induction by demonstrating progress against the Teachers' Standards. There is no statutory expectation that you create any additional paperwork or documentation in the shape of folders or files of evidence, though your school may require you to maintain a portfolio record for your own personal CPD as good practice for the future.

All eight standards (Part One) plus the Personal and Professional Conduct (Part Two) must be achieved to the right level in order for you to pass your induction. An early conversation with your mentor about what the expectations are for your own personal circumstances is advised, so that you know what you are working towards through the year. Undertaking lesson observations of other teachers

You are required to see other teachers in action in their classrooms in order to learn from their good practice. Your mentor should help you to set these visits up.

When you undertake your first one (or subsequent ones where possible) it is really good practice for you to go with your mentor who can then point out the good elements in the other teacher's lesson and highlight the things which you are doing which could benefit from improvement based on the good role model you are observing.

There is no required lesson proforma for these visits but it is really important that you go knowing exactly which standards and areas will be the focus of your observation. As you are not yet trained in lesson observation techniques it is really easy to miss some of the crucial, small elements which could make such a difference to your own practice if you see them in action first. Conduct and e-safety

Teaching is a very public profession and whether we like it or not we are judged by our conduct both in and out of school. It is very important that you present yourself in a manner which is not going to breach Part Two of the Teachers' Standards, but also which is mindful of the world of social media and communication.

There are many courses and events available to help you to learn about e-safety and whether you think you are up-to-date with it, it's always best to err on the side of caution. Your school will have a policy on the use of social media and you need to acquaint yourself with this policy very quickly.

There has been an amendment by the DfE to the information about absences related to Covid-19. These absences will not contribute towards the absence limit that would extend statutory induction. This amendment will now extend to September 2021

Assessment forms

At the end of each period of induction (the equivalent of an academic term), you will be assessed on your progress towards successful completion of induction. There are three assessment periods - the first two are about progress, the third is the pass/fail term. You will have a formal meeting with your mentor at the end of each term and an assessment form is completed which summarises the term that you have just finished. You can see exemplars of these forms on the Resources page of NQT manager.

The forms show the recommendation that the school is making to the Appropriate Body about your progress. This judgment should match the information that you have been receiving throughout the term and should not come as a surprise - whichever way the judgement goes.

Based on this form you should then be set targets for the next term which then form the basis of your new action plan for the next part of induction. At the end of induction the targets can be used to begin your involvement with the Appraisal Process.

You must add your own comments about the term of induction you have undertaken and your reflections on your progress. The form is completed online but you can download a PDF of your form for your own records. This is certainly advisable if you leave the school partway through your induction year. You must keep your copy in a safe place. Just occasionally they are needed later in your career. When you pass induction

Once the school's recommendation for your final form has been submitted to the Appropriate Body and the judgment has been agreed, then you will receive an email from City of Bradford MDC to this effect. This should happen within ten working days of your pass being agreed by the Approptiate Body.

The Appropriate Body will inform the Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA) and will amend your Teacher Record. Once this is done you will be able to access your pass certificate from the TRA on the Teacher Self Service Portal should you want it (we recommend you do download one!). What if....... you are part time?

Your induction will work on a pro-rata basis. Each assessment period will take longer to complete depending on the type of contract you are on. The smaller the contract the more difficult it is for you to demonstrate progress against the standards, but that's not to say it can't be done, just be aware that the contract you have with the school must be for a minimum of a term's equivalent before it can be considered as an inductable post.

NQT manager automatically calculates when assessment forms are due based on the contract details supplied at the time of registration. If your contract changes whilst you are still at the school, remember to check that your mentor has updated your details on NQT Manager so that the dates reflect the contract you are on.

Schools generally know to contact the Appropriate Body if there are any doubts about a post being inductable, but you too can do this if you have any questions. Be aware however that separate Appropriate Bodies may view contracts and posts differently. (Return to top of page)

What if....... you leave the school before finishing induction?

There is no time limit for you to complete induction - despite the rumours! So don't worry on that count.

If you leave part way through a term of induction (due to a contract ending for instance) your school will complete an Interim Assessment form which will reference the progress you have made since your last assessment point (if there has already been one). You must make sure that you have a copy of this form so that you can show it to your next school to help them set appropriate targets for you when you begin induction again.

If you leave at the end of an induction period (assessment 1 or 2) but haven't yet got a new post to go to, then make sure you download a copy of your completed forms, if relevant, to take to your next school. The Appropriate Body will sign you off from the TRA's register so that when you start induction again the next Appropriate Body can sign you on. If you are transfering between schools in the same AB, then this will be indicated on your assessment form and there's no need for a sign off.

It is your school's responsibility to tell the Appropriate Body that you are leaving, but there's nothing wrong with checking that they have done so! (Return to top of page)

What if....... you move home during induction?

Your home address will have been registered with the Appropriate Body when you began induction so we need to know if there are any changes so that we can send letters etc to you to the right address. Most letters will now be sent via email but a postal address is always useful as a backup. If you move you need to ensure that your record with NQT Manager shows the most up to date address. (Return to top of page)

What if....... things are not on track?

Occasionally, and for a variety of reasons, things do not work out during an induction period. It is important to realise that often this can be addressed very swiftly and easily and NQTs can be back on track quite quickly. However sometimes things are a little more difficult or slower to address. Each case is looked at individually and there is no set pattern for the way issues are treated.

First of all, if you hear that you are not on track, remember that terms one and two of induction are about progress towards meeting the standards. If you are using the cycle of support then the information about your progress should not be a sudden surprise. You should check with your mentor exactly what is causing concern and exactly what can be done to change the situation. Is your action plan clear in terms of targets, timelines and expectations? It won't be all of the standards which are causing concern (unless in very extreme cases) so be really honest with your mentor and ask advice and be open to receiving advice.

Your school should let the Appropriate Body know as soon as there are concerns about your progress so that things can be monitored and if need be a meeting can be held to talk over the issues and look at next steps. Are you a member of a Teaching Union?

It is strongly recommended that teachers are members of one professional association when they begin induction.

This is for a number of reasons - firstly the unions offer really good CPD courses for NQTs at very reasonable prices. Secondly if things are not as they ought to be in terms of your induction, union representatives can ask the questions that you don't know to ask. Thirdly, you never know what's going to crop up in this profession - it's what make it so exciting! Sometimes we need that little bit of extra support and though we pray we'll never have to contact them, it's always good to know they are there.
