Celebrate International Women’s Day

 with

Peaceful Women of Bradford

Performed by local author, playwright, actor and historian Irene Lofthouse.

Developed especially for schools with Bradford Libraries.

Bradford Libraries are delighted that we can offer schools two performances celebrating the Peaceful Women of Bradford.

Following on from our workshops for schools on the Suffrage Movement and the Representation of the People’s Act 1918 as well as our four-year programme of WW1 events we are delighted to now look at exploring the world following the end of WW1 and the efforts to use peaceful methods for change.

Peaceful Women of Bradford explores local Bradford women who either campaigned for peace during WW1 or campaigned for rights following the end of the war. These women included Fanny Muir; Esther Sandiford; Julia Varley; Margaret McMillan; Sarah Bezant and Barbara Castle - all Bradford women. Pupils will find out about the role of the Bradford Women’s Humanity League; the Women’s Peace Congress and the women’s movement through the stories of so many strong and out-spoken Bradford women.

The performance includes interaction and audience participation. It explores how the women’s campaigns of the past have influenced both local and international campaigning of today.

The performance is delivered by Irene Lofthouse, local author; playwright; actor and historian.

There will also be an opportunity for pupils to view local archive and press materials from the Bradford Libraries Local History collection.
